Below are just some of the reviews we have received from our hundreds of guests since we opened Au Pear in 2010 …
Fabulous and relaxing
The accommodation was superb. A really beautifully decorated house and garden. Our room had a spacious bed with top quality bed linen. The bathroom was huge with a roll-top bath and walk-in shower. We even had a decanter of sherry and elegant sherry glasses in our room. The host had thought of every minor detail to make this a comfortable home from home stay.
Welcoming, relaxing, quiet, accommodating, beautiful setting. Just a gorgeous place to stay
From the moment I arrived the welcome was Amazing. Friendly and so accomodating. The rooms are fabulous! The most comfortable beds, gorgeous bathroom, special touches. Felt like home with a touch of class. Loved every minute I was there. Very sad to have to leave but will definitely return. Absolutely loved it!
There was nothing I didn’t like.
Homely, quiet and very comfortable
We just wanted to thank you for our stay at your Au Pear Guest House in Cape Town where we spent 4 nights from the 12th to the 16th Oct. We only met you briefly one morning during our stay and afterwards I remebered that we hadn’t thanked you for the lovely note of welcome which greeted us on our arrival in our room. that was such a lovely touch – thank you. Our suite was palatial yet homely, quiet and very comfortable, – ideal. We enjoyed having the option of preparing breakfast for ourselves and even the odd evening meal – a real home from home. We also found Jones very good company and evidently a very efficient and reliable manager for the guest house.
Unfortunately due to the weather we were unable to go up to Table Mountain but otherwise we enjoyed our time in Cape Town and would definitely use Au Pear again should we return.
All our best wishes and thanks,
Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, value for money and beautiful area
Beautifully restored and decorated house. Friendly host and staff. Relaxed atmosphere – home away from home. Very convenient to good restaurants. Beautiful location.
“It was a fabulous stay over Pam – thank you”
“This is a beautifully maintained and very well located B and B. High quality and appealing decor and very comfortable king size bed. The setting is beautiful: a fabulous garden with outdoor table and chairs for breakfast at home – or just to appreciate the setting. Jones welcomed us on arrival and was very helpful and professional in every way. Pam met us the next morning – armed with a delicious sugar-free home made smoothie to get our day off to a healthy start. Would recommend for a couple or working person overnighting (or longer) in CT and wanting a touch of luxury.”
Always again, no doubt !
Excellent stay, lovely setting and a great cozy place ! Very lovely stylish interior, and we had a warm water bottle inside bed – very attentive, very welcoming !

This was my second stay at Au Pear. The room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. The staff was extra friendly. Pam the owner brought yummy smoothies every morning, which was such a nice surprise as this is a self catering guest house.

A must stay
A must stay while wanting to see everything in Cape Town. The house is perfect and everything in it is wonderful quality. Great location, very central and very very charming. Very quiet, great amenities.
Amazing little home away from home
What a lovely place, the location was central and there was great attention to detail in the amenities which made you feel at home. Jones was helpful & friendly and went the extra mile to ensure comfort even keeping bags secure while I was out. Everything was great.

We had a great stay
The linens and furnishing were of high quality. The gentleman who looked after us was extra friendly.

The guesthouse is a lovely old Cape Town home. The bathroom was spacious, with a Victorian bath and large shower and the bedroom was comfortable and clean. The staff, were very welcoming and friendly and we would recommend the guesthouse to anyone looking to stay in the Newlands area. We were given complementary smoothies in the morning, which was very unexpected but a lovely gesture. We only have good things to say about our stay.

Ideal venue for Newlands Cricket Ground
Excellent pub on the street corner, who had a great beer caller. There was also a lovely venue for breakfast a little bit further away, plus Newlands was a gentle 15 – 20 minute walk away.

Wonderful attention to detail, comfortable beds, spacious bathroom. The courtyard is divine. The pub down the road does great food and has a super outdoor bar.

Cute, comfortable and clean cottage
Linen was superb! Loved the bathroom in the Avocado cottage.Liked that I could work in the garden till late at night – during winter months, a more suitable desk in the room would be necessary.
Fantastic tranquil guesthouse
Jones is the host and a great guy who will help you with everything you need. It is very tranquil yet in 10 min you are in the centre of Cape Town. We felt very comfortable here from the first minute.

Will definitely stay here again
Comfortable bed and pillows ensured a goodnights sleep. Well appointed room and bathroom. Jones was very pleasant and most helpful. I will definitely stay here again when next in Cape Town.
Lovely Au Pear
My Cape Town visit was wonderful and I have every intention of coming back in 2-3 years. Au Pear certainly contributed to it being a great experience and I would be very happy to stay with you again. I know that both Julia and Rosanna feel the same way.
Thank you again for your kindness and for sharing you lovely Au Pear.
A gem in the southern suburbs
Lovely place. Have tried quite a few in the area and this is definitely my top pick. Great location if you have a hire car. Beautifully spacious and well equipped. Lack of breakfast not a downside for me as superb self-catering facilities (really can have your friends round). Big plus is very good speed wifi. Would suit the independent traveller(s). Can’t recommend highly enough and I for one shall be back.

Just wanted to let you know that we loved staying at Au Pear and were just sorry that we couldn’t stay longer. We found our room perfectly situated with an outlook onto the courtyard and the convenience of the kitchen so close to us. Thank you for allowing us to come back and used the bathroom before leaving. We hope to be able to stay there sometime in the future again.
Rooms were just gorgeous
Just wanted to thank you for accommodating me at Au Pear last week. I had a wonderful stay, the rooms were just gorgeous and so comfortable, and absolutely loved my stay there!! I will defiantly recommend it to people I know coming to Cape Town.
January in Cape Town
We loved our 3 night stay in Au Pear Boutique Guesthouse. Jones the housekeeper was fantastic. We went for hikes up the foot of table mountain which is in walking distance. Beautiful, comfortable room. Room Tip: We had the Pear Room. It was in the garden – very private.

Jones is an absolute star
I really do apologise for not contacting and thanking you for an absolute wonderful stay. Besides us having a really enjoyable and happy week-end our accommodation and hospitality from AU PEAR was “top draw”. Jones is an absolute star and made us so welcome. Once again many thanks and we will be back for the next test in Cape Town.
Classy and Charming
Very tastefully and beautifully decorated guest house. The owner does not stay on the premises but you are well looked after by Jones, the housekeeper. It has four bedrooms all en suite – rooms are quite small but have large bathrooms. Excellent beds and linen. Well located near to Foresters Arms and SACS high school if you need to come and attend a sports event.

Better that any 5* Hotel
I am just getting down to writing you a line to thank you for the lovely stay we had in Au Pear in February 2013. Your place was beautiful and Jones was No 1. I would love to take a Bridge Group to the Cape but it is a long way but I hope to return to see my family some time and will stay at Au Pear. Of all the things we saw and places we visited, it is the character of Au Pear that is the special, intangible draw to return. Thank You! I have told a lot of my friends about your Guest House – better that any 5* Hotel.
Just so beautiful
My aunts had the most fabulous stay at your guest house – it is just so beautiful, I could move in there myself!! Many thanks again – I will no doubt be recommending Au Pear to future guests.
Just to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Au Pear. Thank you for the lovely breakfasts too!
Extra little touches made our stay very memorable
How we’ve come to love it here at Au Pear! Thank you so much for creating such a lovely home and sharing it with us. All the little touches of art, character, luxury and love, together with your kindness, friendliness of staff (Jones is precious) and the extra little touches certainly made our stay a very memorable one. Thank you also for your willingness to let us have our special day (wedding) here and sharing it with us. We hope to return every year, God-willing and wish you the very best of love, joy and hope in years to come.
This was a very pleasant cape stay option. I often try out different bed and breakfasts – and this one was quite lovely. I had what was considered a small room – but it had a magnificent bathroom. The linen was lovely and the room was very well equipped. I will return for my birthday – as there is an option that you can use the communal dining room for dinner with friends – provided you clean up – having a large number of friends in Cape Town this option is very appealing. It is very well located, and the facilities provided are lovely.

As you know I had the opportunity to stay with you on Saturday and Sunday this past week. I would like to express my delight at staying at your accommodation and to reaffirm how beautiful it is and how much I enjoyed my time there. The furnishings and attention to detail are very beautiful and I can only imagine how lovely it is in March when all the fruit is ripe! (although cape town rain has a charm of its own). I would like to ask what your linen quality is – as it was the nicest I have slept in (and I am comparing this to the Lanzerac, Mount Grace, Claridges London (and Delhi) and several other exceptional places) – is the trick in how you launder your linen? If I remember you said it was 600 percale? Could you confirm as I truly cannot get my home linen to that standard.
Also – I am always on the look out for places where I can stay for a week to work – as I consult and therefore try to find spaces to escape my home. What is your availability for the week of the 22 October?
Will most certainly recommend
It was a really wonderful place to stay. I will definitely be back! I will be coming down every month for business, and will always have Au Pear as my first choice! I have a number of friends with kids at UCT, and am often asked for a recommendation. I will most certainly recommend Au Pear. Jones was really great too.
The smoothy, the friendliness, the style …
Thanks Pam for a fantastic stay plus the potion, the walk, the smoothy, the friendliness, the style, the people … we will see you again.
Attention to every detail
Hi Pam, just thought I would drop you a line to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Au Pear and we will definitely be staying with you again!! It was obviously wonderful to have the place to ourselves including the living areas, but we loved the bedroom and linen, the size of the bathrooms, the attention to every detail and it really felt like home from home!
A cozy, homely, attractive place to stay
We had a marvellous time at Au Pear. What a lovely job you have done of making a cozy, homely, attractive place to stay in! Thanks so much.
Wish we could have stayed longer
Thank you so much for accommodating us at your gorgeous Au Pear. I only wish we could have stayed longer and had time to really absorb the gorgeous decor and ambience. Another time … I am sorry we were not able to say goodbye to you or Jones (what a friendly man!) but please say thank you to him for helping. And thanks for being so obliging and taking us at short notice.I am sure Au Pear is going to be a huge success.
This is paradise
This is paradise. We had a busy time in Cape Town, and being able to come to Au Pear at the end of each day was the best thing ever. Our welcome was outstanding – especially as we arrived so late. Our room was something out of a magazine – with every need met. Au Pear is the most superb place we have ever stayed at, and we do stay at a lot of B&Bs. We will always try and stay here whenever we come to Cape Town. This is the Best place to stay.
When Greenwood Guides saw Au Pear with a view to including the guest house in their South African publication, their representative, Ross Bowers, wrote …
"Jones was putting the finishing touches to the brick ‘braai’ on the morning I arrived. The pièce de résistance on an eight-month renovation of this 100-year-old property in the peaceful and leafy suburb of Newlands. Malawi (not Indiana) Jones is the charming manager/butler/factotum who lives on the property, while the ebullient owner Pam lives just over the road next to the Forrester’s Arms Pub.
Chatting to her on the ‘stoep’ with the crickets chirruping in the proteas, I could see that Pam has put her heart and soul into this project. The attention to detail is meticulous, from the flat-screen televisions and 600-thread cotton sheets to the hand-crafted ostrich egg-shell mirrors in the modern, concrete-screed bathrooms where dainty, re-upholstered, Victorian chairs sit neatly alongside deep, claw-foot baths. Antique pieces adorn the original, pine floorboards throughout, yet Pam has somehow created the atmosphere of a rather relaxed Karoo farmhouse centered around a country kitchen.
Each room has its own private entrance and each is named after trees that are flourishing under Pam’s nurturing supervision – plum, pear, grape and avo. On a scorching spring day I couldn’t wait to get my novel, pour myself a glass of chilled water collected from the natural spring down the road and kick back under the dappled shade of the grape vine ensconcing itself around the white columns (the grapes are delicious by the by).
Au Pear is quite simply fantastic. Oh, and it’s amazing value for money as well!"
