Below are just some of the reviews we have received from our hundreds of guests since we opened Au Pear in 2010 …
When Greenwood Guides saw Au Pear with a view to including the guest house in their South African publication, their representative, Ross Bowers, wrote …
"Jones was putting the finishing touches to the brick ‘braai’ on the morning I arrived. The pièce de résistance on an eight-month renovation of this 100-year-old property in the peaceful and leafy suburb of Newlands. Malawi (not Indiana) Jones is the charming manager/butler/factotum who lives on the property, while the ebullient owner Pam lives just over the road next to the Forrester’s Arms Pub.
Chatting to her on the ‘stoep’ with the crickets chirruping in the proteas, I could see that Pam has put her heart and soul into this project. The attention to detail is meticulous, from the flat-screen televisions and 600-thread cotton sheets to the hand-crafted ostrich egg-shell mirrors in the modern, concrete-screed bathrooms where dainty, re-upholstered, Victorian chairs sit neatly alongside deep, claw-foot baths. Antique pieces adorn the original, pine floorboards throughout, yet Pam has somehow created the atmosphere of a rather relaxed Karoo farmhouse centered around a country kitchen.
Each room has its own private entrance and each is named after trees that are flourishing under Pam’s nurturing supervision – plum, pear, grape and avo. On a scorching spring day I couldn’t wait to get my novel, pour myself a glass of chilled water collected from the natural spring down the road and kick back under the dappled shade of the grape vine ensconcing itself around the white columns (the grapes are delicious by the by).
Au Pear is quite simply fantastic. Oh, and it’s amazing value for money as well!"
