For anyone with kids, you will know that planning a family activity is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Making sure the young ‘uns are well looked after is one thing, but keeping them occupied and happy is something else entirely. But this is something Cape Town is really good for - so here's a HUGE list of awesome things to do …

THE BOOK LOUNGE - Every Saturday at 11:00, a free story telling session perfect for 3-8-year-olds. You can get some "me time too"; enjoy a cuppa at their coffee shop or browse the myriad interesting and unusual books. It’s best to book.

ACROBRANCHING CONSTANTIA - Unleash your inner ape and go swinging through the tree tops. The three courses are each equipped with zip lines, sing bridges and Tarzan swings. The courses are family-friendly and safe for children as young as 3yrs.

ATLANTIC RAIL STEAM TRAIN - Vintage steam locomotive offers day trips most Sundays. Hop on this old iron horse in Cape Town at 10:30 for a slow, scenic ride along the Peninsula to Simon’s Town (departs 15:15). You can also get off at Kalk Bay. Booking is essential.

THE COMPANY’S GARDENS - There are so many open spaces for kids to run around in and they get to feed the squirrels! Buy a bag of peanuts for the squirrels from the vendors at the entrance, take a leisurely stroll then eat and drink at the  Company’s Garden restaurant.

GO KARTING - The perfect spot for those who want some friendly petrolhead-related competition. See who can set the fastest lap time or complete more laps in a set amount of time.

THE CLAY CAFÉ - Spend the day painting crockery that you can take home with you. The staff are on hand to help everyone with various techniques and the restaurant is open all day.Website:

COLLEGE OF MAGIC - This magical arts school has a one-of-a-kind curriculum for all to enjoy; the junior courses are held on Saturday mornings. You can also hire a performer for parties.

RUSH TRAMPOLINE PARK - An indoor park filled with wall-to-wall trampolines, two dodgeball courts, three basketball slam dunk lanes, two long trampoline lanes perfect for doing flips, a battle beam and loads more. Has to be tried.

HINTHUNT GAME - An exciting 60-minute live escape game perfect for groups of three to five people; solve mysteries and puzzles in order to get out. The minimum age is 9yrs (accompanied by an adult) or 15yrs unaccompanied.

CAPE TOWN SCIENCE CENTRE - There are interactive displays, a fun building site where kids can build houses, puzzles to solve, insights into gravity, brainwaves and so much more!

SCRATCH PATCH - Did you know that almost half of the world’s gemstones can be found in South Africa? The Scratch Patch and Mineral World (at the V&A Waterfront and in Simonstown) is a cool way to dig for your own beautiful gems.

SATURDAY VOLUNTEERING AT SPCA - Dedicated volunteers are needed to help with socialising and walking dogs, cleaning them and cleaning cages; cleaning litter trays and grooming cats and kittens; or help at the horse care unit.

BUGZ FAMILY PLAYPARK - Indoor and outdoor areas for children aged 2 to 10 years, with a choo-choo train, swing horses, water slide, horse rides, quad bikes, free play areas, a tree house and even castle – plus regular magic shows and visiting Bugz characters.

IZIKO MUSEUM PLANETARIUM - Inside the planetarium, visitors get to study the night sky, all the stars and the planets of our universe. Various shows make learning about stars fun and exciting.

TOTS 'n POTS CONSTANTIA - Want your kids to cook but don’t want to clean up afterwards? Here they can fling flour and bash butter to their hearts’ content - under your supervision. Particularly good for smaller kids, you can sign up for a single lesson or a whole course. Booking is essential.

ZIPZAP CIRCUS SCHOOL - Great for those who dream to be in circus arts of any sorts. Programmes are FREE and funded by various individuals and organisations. The school also puts on various shows throughout the year.

THE BLUE TRAIN - A miniature train with a sea view! It's operated at Mouille Point by the Sea Point Rotary Club and has been around for 50 years. Children and adults alike can enjoy this fun train trip for only R15 per ride.

PLANET KIDS - Indoor play and activity centre in Muizenberg open Wednesdays to Sundays. There are jumping castles, fun slides, great work rooms and so much more!

DEER PARK CAFÉ - In an idyllic setting just above the city bowl, it's perfect for a lazy lunch. With a fenced play area, complete with swings, slides, jungle gyms and a rolling lawn just outside the café, the youngsters have plenty to keep them busy!

IMHOFF FARM - Open daily, this picturesque farm in Kommetjie has a free-range farm and coffee shop, café, wine shop, petting zoo, plus an equestrian centre for outrides on Noordhoek Beach and the opportunity to ride a camel!


ART JAMMING - This is great for both the young and the young-at-heart. Everyone gets to choose a blank canvas and they select their seat and get given their painting tools.

BLUE ROCK - The paintball course is epic and you can spend the whole day out at the centre, which also offers water skiing, a "foefie" slide and more!

SPRINGBOK EXPERIENCE - Designed to simulate what the players go through with tests for fitness, hand-offs, passing and kicking, it is popular with everyone.

COOL RUNNINGS - Cape Town may not have snow, but that didn’t stop us building Africa’s first toboggan track. The best part is you are in full control of the sled, so cut loose or ride the brake - it’s up to you! It can get busy, so plan ahead.

WORLD OF BIRDS - The largest bird sanctuary in Africa, home to more than 3,000 birds and small animals from over 400 species. Get close to a wonderful array of birds, including birds of prey. The Monkey Jungle is always a big hit too. 

JOLLY ROGER - What kid doesn’t want to be a pirate? The Jolly Roger pirate boat at the V&A Waterfront is the perfect port of call for the youngsters to play out the ultimate adventure on the high seas.

CITYROCK INDOOR CLIMBING - Open to anyone older that 5yrs. There are climbing courses and three climbing options for kids: Bouldering, Automatic belay wall and High Wall Top Roping.

GREEN POINT URBAN PARK - A unique family-friendly space for a picnic, walk, run or for simply lazing around. There is an outdoor gym, a play park, adventure park and outdoor labyrinth.

NOORDHOEK HORSE RIDES - Sleepy Hollow Horse Riding has been operating in the Noordhoek Valley since 1975 and offers a wide range of riding activities. Beach rides are limited to six people, but suits riders of all experience levels.

RATANGA JUNCTION - The kids will love it and the adults can channel their inner child on everything from The Cobra to Monkey Falls. Spend the day at Ratanga Junction and go on as many rides together as possible.

TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM - With more than 3,000 marine creatures on view – including sharks, turtles and penguins – this is one of the best aquaria in the world. It showcases the unique marine life of the Cape. See the resident ragged tooth sharks fed daily at 3pm!

CHEETAH OUTREACH - Meet a regal cat-thlete at the Cheetah Outreach Centre. Tours are free. Cuddles from cheetah cubs are R160 and you may even get the chance to pet a fully grown adult cheetah!

STRAWBERRY PICKING - Polkadraai Strawberry Farm is open to the public; enjoy an afternoon at this Stellenbosch-based strawberry farm with your entire family. Open 9am - 4pm during strawberry season. Great photo opportunities too.

SCHOOL OF ROCK CAPE TOWN - Designed to build confidence in budding rockers, the school offers a number of programmes, including parties and themed events – it’s never too late to rock out!

SPIER WINE FARM - Geared to a full family experience with everything from grape juice tasting to the Eagle Encounters facility on offer. Spier doesn’t just welcome family, they embrace them.

BUTTERFLY WORLD - Home to free-flying exotic butterflies, alongside other animal displays, including reptiles, tarantulas, birds, marmoset monkeys, meerkats and lots more. Children under 3yrs are free.

THE ICE STATION - For just R45 you get entry to the ice rink and a pair of rental skates to enjoy hours of gliding on a bed of ice. There is also a mini-arena reserved for younger kids. You'll need gloves and an extra pair of socks.

Haunted Cape Town - The Mother City is the oldest city in the country, so it's a breeding ground for tales of the macabre. Sure, there might not be too many zombies – but ghosts? You can bet we got plenty of those.

EAGLE ENCOUNTERS - A bird rescue centre at Spier where you can join interactive bird shows and are allowed to hold an eagle.

OSTRICH ENCOUNTERS - Feed ostriches and learn about the world's biggest flightless birds at the West Coast Ostrich Ranch or drive south to the Cape Point Ostrich Farm.  At the West Coast Ostrich Ranch - can stand on an ostrich egg and even sit on an ostrich. Alongside the restaurant there's also a children's play area with climbing frame and sandpit.
